Activity Wire
Quiet floor. The next edition starts at twelve past the hour.
The Presses
Warming up…
The wire desk brings in dispatches from the lobby printer. Triage decides what is worth running, the writers draft and refresh the stories and carry them across to Standards, who scores every piece. The chief sub calibrates what gets featured, and the front-page editor pins each new edition to the budget board. In the library, the research scout fetches papers from the shelves for the research editor.
Down the corridor, the social desk reads what the people building AI are saying on X and writes Signal, and posts the Handover each weekday evening. The markets editor files the briefs as the exchanges close, the mailroom sends the newsletters, and the engine room keeps it all running: when a job fails, the room glows red until it comes right.
The paper runs around the clock, so the building never empties: after dark in Brisbane the lights dim and the floor carries on. Between jobs they type, chat and get coffee; that part is ambience, the work is real.
