David Gilmour's Iconic Black Stratocaster Sells for Record $14.55 Million at Auction

The Fender Stratocaster played on six Pink Floyd albums including The Dark Side of the Moon becomes the most expensive guitar ever sold

David Gilmour's black Fender Stratocaster, played on six Pink Floyd albums including The Dark Side of the Moon, has sold for $14.55 million at auction, shattering the record for the most expensive guitar ever sold.

The instrument is one of the most recognizable guitars in rock history. Gilmour used the black Stratocaster extensively throughout Pink Floyd's most celebrated period, and its distinctive tone shaped some of the most iconic guitar solos ever recorded.

The previous record for a guitar at auction was held by Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged Martin D-18E, which sold for $6 million in 2020. Gilmour's black Strat more than doubled that figure.

Gilmour has previously auctioned guitars for charity, with a 2019 sale of 126 instruments raising $21.5 million for environmental causes. It is not yet confirmed whether proceeds from this sale will go to charitable purposes.

Analysis

Why This Matters

The sale reflects the enduring cultural significance of rock music artifacts in an era when streaming has devalued recorded music. Physical objects connected to iconic performances continue to appreciate as the artists who created them age.

Background

The guitar auction market has seen explosive growth, with instruments from deceased or retired rock legends commanding increasingly astronomical prices. The market treats these instruments as both cultural artifacts and alternative investments.

What to Watch

Whether this record stands or whether upcoming auctions of instruments from other rock legends push prices even higher.
