Realta Fusion, which is converting an old Oscar Mayer factory in Madison into its research and development facility, has inked a partnership with Madison Gas and Electric to place one of the first grid-connected fusion power plants in the country in Wisconsin. The deal, announced this week, includes an equity investment from the utility alongside engineering support, permitting assistance, access to interconnection sites, land leases, and financing for the eventual plant.
The planned 200-megawatt facility—enough to power a small city—is expected to come online sometime in the mid-2030s. Realta did not disclose the specifics of the equity investment, and the startup did not immediately reply to requests for more information.
The partnership is part of a broader trend: utilities worldwide, typically cautious, have been racing to court fusion startups. The shift is driven by significant scientific and engineering progress by fusion companies in recent years, combined with soaring demand from AI data centers, which has created an urgent need for round-the-clock, carbon-free power.
Fusion offers a potential solution to the intermittency challenges of wind and solar, which only generate power under certain conditions. While batteries have helped stabilize renewable flows, utilities are also seeking fossil fuel-free alternatives that can provide consistent, 24/7 baseload power—a role fusion plants are designed to fill. To date, only a handful of fusion startups have announced deals with utilities.
Other notable partnerships include Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), which is nearly two years into a deal with Dominion Energy. CFS has agreed to lease land from Dominion for its first commercial-scale plant, Arc, which will connect to the grid near Richmond, Virginia, and generate 400 megawatts of electricity.
