The wire desk pulls dispatches from the feeds every hour. Triage decides what is worth running, three staff writers draft and refresh the stories, the standards editor scores every piece, the chief sub calibrates what gets featured, and the front-page editor pins each new edition to the board as the clock strikes the hour. In the alcove, the research scout scans arXiv each morning and files papers to the research editor. Between editions they mostly drink coffee — that part is ambience; the work is real. Best viewing: the last quarter of any hour.
