Databricks announced on Thursday it has acquired Row Zero, an early-stage startup building cloud-based spreadsheets capable of handling over 1 million live rows. The deal, terms of which were not disclosed, was sparked by Databricks’ own finance team, which had adopted Row Zero as a cloud tool to work with large datasets and paired it with the company's homegrown AI agent, Genie.
Genie allows users to query data stored in Databricks systems using natural-language prompts — analyzing profit margins or tracking sales prospects, for instance. When executives noticed the finance team using Row Zero, they saw an opportunity to integrate the spreadsheet format directly into the Databricks platform.
“Spreadsheets are one such interface that every business analyst loves. So it makes a lot of sense to intermarry Business Intelligence (BI), Agents, and Spreadsheets!” Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi posted on X, recounting how the acquisition came together.
The integration means enterprise data can remain secure within Databricks' cloud storage while users interact with it through spreadsheet formulas and formats, eliminating the common practice of exporting sensitive data to insecure shared spreadsheets.
Row Zero was founded by former AWS and Tableau engineers. According to PitchBook, the startup raised $10 million in May 2025 at an estimated valuation of $40 million.
The acquisition is the latest in a busy 2026 for Databricks, which closed another $5 billion in funding in August and has reached a $7 billion annualized revenue run rate. Earlier this year, the company purchased Quotient AI and SiftD.ai in March, AI security operations center startup Panther in June, and Electric — makers of the lightweight Postgres database PGlite — last month.
“We intend to do many more acquisitions like this in the future,” Ghodsi told TechCrunch, signaling that the company's dealmaking is far from over.
