Bitcoin (BTC) breached the psychologically important $80,000 threshold for the first time, according to data from CoinDesk, building on gains that began after the Treasury Department announced an expansion of its bond-buyback operations last week. The move, which injects additional liquidity into the financial system, has sparked a broad rally across risk assets, with cryptocurrencies among the primary beneficiaries.
Ether (ETH) also rose, climbing roughly 5% to trade above $4,200, while other major tokens posted solid gains. However, technical indicators now suggest the market may be overheating. Relative strength index (RSI) readings on several timeframes have moved into 'overbought' territory, raising the possibility of a near-term pullback or consolidation.
Solana (SOL) stood out, jumping 8% ahead of a crucial validator vote on two proposed network changes: one to reduce the rate at which new SOL is minted (effectively slowing inflation) and another to increase the proportion of transaction fees that are burned. If passed, the changes could meaningfully reduce the net supply of SOL, making the token more scarce. Validators are expected to cast their votes within the next few days.
"The Treasury's move is seen as a de facto easing measure, and markets are repricing accordingly," said a trader at a Hong Kong-based crypto fund cited by CoinDesk. "For Solana, the supply-side proposals are a bullish signal if they go through, but there's always the risk that validators vote them down."
Despite the euphoria, caution is warranted. On-chain data shows that short-term holders have been booking profits at an accelerating pace, a pattern that often precedes a correction. The overbought RSI warning does not guarantee an immediate reversal, but it suggests that much of the good news may already be priced in.
The rally has also reignited debate about the sustainability of crypto gains driven by macroeconomic policy rather than fundamentals. Critics argue that relying on liquidity injections creates a fragile rally that could reverse quickly if the Treasury or Federal Reserve signal a change in course.
For now, the momentum remains strong. Bitcoin's move above $80,000 has drawn renewed attention from institutional investors, with several firms reporting increased inflows into spot ETFs. Whether the rally has legs may depend on whether the Treasury maintains its accommodative stance and on the outcome of Solana's governance vote.
