The Royal Australian Navy and its contractor JFD have been conducting simulated submarine rescue missions off the coast of Western Australia, testing the LR5 rescue sub, a system described as a “lifeline” for submariners in distress. The $23 million per annum contract ensures the vessel can be deployed within 12 hours to retrieve stranded crew from depths of hundreds of metres.
