Hours after police cleared a protest camp in Lisbon and demonstrators in Porto dismantled their own tents on police orders, with 55 people arrested during the operations, thousands of demonstrators returned to central squares to renew their occupation against Portugal's intensifying housing crisis and a government bill that activists say will make evictions easier and end rent caps on new leases.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets across at least four European countries on Saturday in separate, uncoordinated demonstrations against soaring living costs, with France seeing its most turbulent day of protests in decades and clashes in Brussels, Lisbon, Milan and Bologna.
