Science · Quantum rivalry in copper-oxide ceramics may explain high-temperature superconductivity

Physicists have found evidence of a hidden rivalry between two quantum states inside copper-oxide superconductors, a discovery that could help explain how these ceramics carry electricity with no resistance at comparatively warm temperatures. The finding, from a team led by Canada's National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS), was published alongside a complementary European study in Nature Physics, and neither settles the puzzle on its own, but together they sharpen the picture of a phenomenon physicists have chased for decades.
