Scientists at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine have discovered that microscopic titanium particles released from corroding dental implants hijack the immune system, explaining why antibiotic-resistant infections known as peri-implantitis affect up to one in five implant recipients. The findings, published in PNAS Nexus, identify a calcium channel in immune cells as a potential drug target for a condition that costs healthcare systems more than $1 billion annually.
