Solana activated its Alpenglow upgrade on Wednesday, introducing a new voting system designed to reduce transaction finality to about 150 milliseconds under normal conditions, down from several seconds previously. The upgrade changes how validators communicate, allowing them to exchange votes directly and combine them into certificates, enabling blocks to become final after one or two voting rounds. Users can continue using existing wallets, fees and applications remain unchanged, but network dashboards may show lower transaction totals because validator votes are no longer recorded as blockchain transactions.
