Switzerland’s glaciers lost more than 5% of their total ice volume in 2026, contributing to a cumulative decline of nearly 20% over just five years, according to the annual report from the Swiss Academy of Sciences. The findings, published October 23 by ETH Zurich, show that extreme summer heat and an unusually snowless winter pushed several major glaciers to their worst melting on record and caused smaller glaciers to disappear completely.
