Physicist awarded the 2026 Europhysics Prize for establishing altermagnetism

Science · 19 Oct 2026Third form of magnetism discovered, three physicists win 2026 Europhysics Prize

Physicists have identified a third fundamental class of magnetism, known as altermagnetism, overturning an understanding of magnetic behavior that had stood for more than a century. The European Physical Society has named Professor Jairo Sinova, Dr. Libor Šmejkal and Professor Tomas Jungwirth as recipients of the 2026 Europhysics Prize for establishing altermagnetism as a distinct magnetic order alongside ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism.
