ABC journalist Will Murray and another bystander rescued a man from a sinking four-wheel-drive on a flooded road at Morayfield, north of Brisbane, on Thursday morning, with the vehicle disappearing underwater minutes after the driver was freed.

The ABC journalist was reporting on heavy rain in south-east Queensland when he saw a 4WD attempt to cross Buchanan Road. The vehicle stalled and began to float downstream. Murray and camera operator Liz Pickering had just arrived to film the flooded road when a man in a black ute drove past them into the water.

"His car almost immediately started floating and drifting down the creek," Murray said. He called emergency services but could see the ute would soon be submerged.

"This guy didn't seem to be able to get out of the car, so myself and another man made the decision to jump in and get over to him to see if we could open the door," Murray said. He said the water was not difficult to swim through and there was no heavy current.

When they reached the vehicle, the driver's side door would not open. "We could see he was struggling, the water was very high. I went around the other side and managed to put my feet up against the side of the car and we dragged him out," Murray said. "His car just disappeared within a couple of minutes of getting out. You could no longer see the car – completely vanished."

The rescued man spoke to paramedics and police at the scene but was not taken to hospital. The Bureau of Meteorology recorded 249 millimetres of rain in Morayfield in the 24 hours to midday Thursday.

In a statement, the ABC said: "Will showed great courage and initiative. We are pleased to confirm he is safe and well."

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • The rescue highlights the dangers of driving through floodwaters, which kill more Australians annually than any other natural hazard.
  • The incident occurred during severe weather that dumped nearly 250mm of rain on Morayfield, underscoring the intensity of the storm system.
  • The swift actions of ordinary citizens rather than emergency services saved a life, raising questions about public preparedness for flash flooding.

Background

South-east Queensland has experienced repeated flooding events in recent years, with catchments saturated and road closures common during heavy rain. The Bureau of Meteorology warned of severe thunderstorms and possible flash flooding across the region on Thursday. Buchanan Road in Morayfield is a known low-lying route that can become impassable during downpours.

Key Perspectives

The reporter (Will Murray): He and a bystander acted without hesitation after seeing the driver trapped, swimming to the car and forcing the door open as it sank. The ABC (employer): Praised Murray's courage and initiative, confirming his safety. The organisation did not comment on any broader safety protocols for journalists in flood zones. The driver: He was assessed by paramedics at the scene but declined hospital transport. No further details about his condition or decision to drive onto the flooded road were provided.

What to Watch

  • Further flood warnings as the rain band moves south along the Queensland coast; additional rescues may occur.
  • Any local government review of warning signage or barriers at Buchanan Road.
  • Whether the ABC or media unions issue guidance for journalists covering flood events in dangerous conditions.
