In one line

Even the best tested LLM agent completes only 5.0% of tasks in a benchmark requiring selection from 1,000 APIs over long chains of steps.

Enterprises want AI agents (, or LLMs) to automate their procedures by calling internal software functions (APIs). Current tests use only a handful of functions or single steps, not the real world where thousands of APIs must be selected across long sequences.

Researchers built SLATE, a with roughly 1,000 e-commerce APIs and a simulator that executes task calls. Success is measured by whether every step of the task completes correctly, regardless of the path taken. Several open source models were tested.

The best model succeeded on only 5.0% of the tasks. This shows current models are very unreliable for complex, multi step enterprise automation and provides a clear yardstick for measuring progress.
