Apple this week began taking preorders for the HomePod Mini 2, the first update to its small smart speaker since the original HomePod Mini debuted nearly six years ago. The device is priced at $149 and is scheduled to reach customers on Friday, October 30.
The new speaker is built around the S10 chip, which previously appeared in the Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple says the chip enables a range of new capabilities. The HomePod Mini 2 will support Siri AI after a future software update, which the company says will provide a more capable voice assistant.
Beyond the assistant, Apple is positioning the speaker as part of a wider home setup. It can be integrated into a four-speaker surround sound system alongside the new Apple TV 4K, and it can serve as a speaker for a Mac, provided the computer supports Wi-Fi 6E.
Preorders are currently available through Apple's website, with the company listing an October 30 ship date.
