Apple's research and development expenses reached a record $45.77 billion in fiscal 2026, a 32 per cent increase from $34.55 billion the previous year, according to the company's quarterly results. Apple significantly accelerated its spending over the past year.
In the fourth quarter, Apple spent $11.73 billion on R&D, up 32 per cent from $8.87 billion in the same period a year earlier, but just $1 million above the third quarter. The near-static quarterly figure suggests the steep increase that marked the start of the fiscal year may be stabilising.
During an earnings call earlier this year, former CEO Tim Cook said Apple was "clearly investing more" and that R&D was "accelerating much higher than the company" overall. CFO Kevan Parekh explained that AI-related spending was being added to the investments Apple was already making in its existing product roadmap.
The company's total R&D outlay for fiscal 2026 came to $45.77 billion, climbing from $34.55 billion in fiscal 2025. The 32 per cent year-over-year rise reflects a significant acceleration in spending, driven partly by the push into artificial intelligence amid what the company described as growing competition in the field.
