Victorian jockey Jamie Mott celebrated his first Sydney win on Saturday, guiding Attrition to a half-neck victory over Lindermann in the $2 million Hill Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill.
Mott, who had only 11 rides in Sydney across almost 23 years in the saddle before the race, partnered Attrition for just the second time. The horse had finished third as a $100 shot in the Underwood Stakes last start on debut for Mott.
Lindermann, who finished last in the Underwood, started the $1.70 favourite for the Hill Stakes. The horse won the same race ahead of 2024 winner Attrition last year. Nash Rawiller controlled the race from the front on Lindermann before Mott and Attrition ($6) wore them down late for the narrow victory. Eliyass finished third.
"You may as well do it in the big ones," Mott said of scoring his first Sydney win. "I'd love to come up more often, if the opportunities are there, I'd definitely be happy to jump on a plane. But it was a great result for Mitch and his team, and obviously myself, too."
The win delivered a rich breakthrough for the Victorian jockey, who had been confident Attrition had the upper hand on Lindermann after their most recent clash.
