The award honours Duan's work alongside the tasting menu at Restaurant Gaea, whose kitchen is known for dishes such as emu tartare, fermented macadamia and carrot jerky.
Duan, a former chef himself, presents each low-intervention wine pick with a story. His list moves across regions and styles, from a sweet lemongrass chai served as an aperitif to luscious sparkling plum cider from China, cloudy unpasteurised sake from Japan, Czech gruner veltliner, French cabernet franc and generous Italian primitivo from Puglia.
The Age Good Food Guide judges praised the sommelier for an "out-of-the-box" wine list that holds its own across the tasting menu's 18-plus courses, celebrating rare sakes, up-and-coming producers and undersung wine regions. Even unfinished bottles are put to use, ending up in a signature dessert of oxidised wine mousse with granita.
The guide described Duan as "a singular, deft and daring drinks mind." His win is among a number of honours announced in this year's awards, with the full list of winners published alongside his citation.
