Software contains bugs that human maintainers fix during development. It is not known whether artificial intelligence , programs that automatically examine code, can find those same bugs.
The researchers built a benchmark by taking snapshots of several open-source repositories and collecting all bugs that maintainers fixed over the following months. They then evaluated numerous AI coding agents on their ability to find these bugs.
Fewer than twenty-one out of every hundred bugs fixed by maintainers were found by any agent, and fewer than nine out of every hundred bugs reported by agents matched one of those fixed bugs. However, most of the bugs the agents found were still real, they simply differed in type from the ones humans fix, over-focusing on local logic errors instead of missing functionality. This gap shows that current AI agents do not yet discover the bugs that developers consider important.
