The 36-year-old, who will turn 37 in January and become the oldest player in the NRL following Daly Cherry-Evans's move to England, returned from Italy this week after attending teammate Jai Arrow's wedding. He has only failed to play 20 or more games in a season once in 11 years, despite a calf injury in last season's elimination final against eventual grand finalists Newcastle.
According to sources with knowledge of the negotiations, Walker's confidence in Souths' roster, particularly with the arrival of marquee recruit Payne Haas, has driven his desire for the premiership clause. Walker and fullback Latrell Mitchell have had similar clauses in previous contracts, narrowly missing out on bonuses when Souths lost the 2021 grand final to Penrith.
The Rabbitohs face salary cap constraints for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, limiting their ability to sign outside players. Fullback Matt Dufty earned a $1,200-a-week training wage plus $3,000 match payments last season, and the club is unlikely to pursue Dolphins winger Jack Bostock, should he become available, due to price concerns. Young halves Taj Alvarez and Matt Humphries are developing in lower grades but remain at least 12 months away from NRL regulars.
In other club news, Wests Tigers have confirmed in-demand back-rower Samuela Fainu has extended his contract until the end of 2029. Fainu, reportedly a target for the new Papua New Guinea-based NRL team, cited coach Benji Marshall as a key factor in his decision to remain at Concord.
"He not only wants me to be the best footy player I can be, but he also wants me to be the best version of myself off the field, and that's something you can't find in many places," Fainu said. His older brother Sione is already committed to the Tigers until the end of 2029.
