Teresa Benitez-Thompson became the first Democrat ever elected to represent Nevada's 2nd Congressional District on Tuesday. The social worker, former pageant queen and former Assembly majority leader defeated small-business owner David Flippo, a Republican backed by President Donald Trump, in a district Trump won by 14 points in 2024.
The seat, represented by longtime Republican Rep. Mark Amodei, had long been considered safely Republican. Amodei’s surprise retirement in February was followed by a contentious GOP primary, in which Trump-endorsed Flippo defeated Amodei’s preferred successor.
Flippo faced predictable attacks suggesting he was a carpetbagger, as well as scrutiny over controversies about his military record and honors and a missing personal financial disclosure. In the final weeks, pop-up Super PACs spent thousands directing Republican voters toward the Independent American Party nominee, who had run for the seat previously.
Benitez-Thompson campaigned even in the district's reddest areas and focused on affordability and fighting corruption. Though known as a moderate in the state Assembly, she embraced some progressive causes, including conditioning aid to Israel. “We've been running all day,” she told The Nevada Independent. “We're not taking one single vote or one single minute for granted.”
The contest became the most expensive in the district's history. A Trump-affiliated PAC, which had planned to spend $3 million supporting Marty O'Donnell, canceled its ad reservation to triage races elsewhere.
In Southern Nevada, Democratic Reps. Dina Titus, Susie Lee and Steven Horsford easily dispatched their Republican challengers, holding the state's traditional battlegrounds. Lee was one of just 13 House Democrats nationwide to win a district that voted for President Trump in 2024.
Analysis
Why This Matters
- Benitez-Thompson's victory underscores the force of the Democratic blue wave in 2026, flipping a district that consistently voted Republican.
- Her win highlights how candidate controversies can undermine structural advantages, offering a strategic lesson for both parties.
- The result solidifies Democrats' hold on Nevada's House delegation, expanding their representation in the chamber.
Background
- Nevada's 2nd Congressional District, covering Northern Nevada, had never elected a Democrat. Longtime Republican Rep. Mark Amodei held the seat until his surprise retirement in February 2026.
- President Donald Trump won the district by 14 points in 2024, making the Democratic flip a significant upset.
- The race attracted unprecedented outside spending, becoming the most expensive in the district's history.
Key Perspectives
Teresa Benitez-Thompson: framed her campaign around local needs, affordability, and fighting corruption, telling The Nevada Independent her focus was entirely on the district's unique requirements.
Voter James Peters: a Republican who said he saw little good from David Flippo and doubted he could vote for a Democrat, ultimately leaning toward the Independent American Party nominee.
Voter Jeff Hohnholz: a Republican who voted for Flippo but described it as picking the lesser of two evils.
What to Watch
- Whether Flippo's campaign controversies inform future Republican candidate vetting at the national level.
- How the district's political leanings evolve: is this a one-time fluke or a sign of realignment.
- The impact of massive outside spending and the role of small-dollar PACs in competitive House races.
