Distillation trains a small language model, the student, to imitate a stronger teacher. On-policy means the student writes its own text and gets corrected token by token, a token being a word fragment. Each correction is weighted by how unsure the student is, so words it feels sure about get almost no teaching.
That weighting looks backwards: confidence does not mean correctness, and the teacher often disagrees. The fix instead treats each token as a yes-or-no bet and matches the teacher's probability for it directly, so confident tokens keep a correction sized by disagreement.
Averaged over five reasoning tests, scores rose from 44.38 to 51.76 over the standard method, and the gain held across four teacher and student pairings.
