A 40-year-old woman has entered not guilty pleas in the ACT Magistrates Court to charges of culpable driving causing death over a crash that killed two cyclists on Gungahlin Drive in Canberra's north.

Thi Phuong Ngoc Nguyen, 40, was summonsed to appear before the court on two counts of culpable driving causing death and one count of negligent driving occasioning actual bodily harm. She did not attend in person and was represented by her lawyer, Mitchell Greig, who entered the pleas and requested a date for a pre-hearing mention.

The charges stem from a collision on the morning of August 27 on Gungahlin Drive in Palmerston. Police allege Ms Nguyen was driving a blue Hyundai Accent that struck a group of five cyclists. Bridie Lee, 32, died at the scene, while Ryan Riethmuller, 39, died in hospital a week later. An off-duty nurse and a police officer were among the members of the public who provided assistance while waiting for emergency services.

Ms Lee and Mr Riethmuller were members of the Canberra Bilbys Triathlon Club, and their deaths prompted an outpouring of grief within the local cycling and triathlon community, including a large tribute ride. The case is due to return to court in January 2027.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • The case has drawn significant attention to road safety and the vulnerability of cyclists in the ACT following a tragic double fatality.
  • The trial will determine legal accountability for a crash that devastated close-knit triathlon and cycling communities in Canberra.
  • The proceedings may serve as a test case for culpable driving laws and community expectations around driver responsibility toward vulnerable road users.

Background

The fatal crash occurred on Gungahlin Drive in Palmerston in August 2026, when a Hyundai Accent struck five cyclists. Two of the cyclists, Bridie Lee and Ryan Riethmuller, both members of the Canberra Bilbys Triathlon Club, died as a result. The incident led to a highly publicised tribute ride involving hundreds of mourners. Last month, Thi Phuong Ngoc Nguyen was summonsed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court, and today she entered not guilty pleas to the charges.

Key Perspectives

The Accused: Ms Nguyen has formally denied the charges of culpable driving causing death and negligent driving through her legal representative. The matter is proceeding through pre-trial processes. The Cycling Community: The deaths of Ms Lee and Mr Riethmuller have been deeply felt by Canberra's cycling community, which has been closely following the legal proceedings and seeking answers through the court process.

What to Watch

  • Next court date set for January 2027.
  • Whether the matter proceeds to a full trial or is resolved through a plea.
  • Potential legislative or policy reactions from the ACT government regarding cyclist safety on high-speed roads.
