Jalen Hurts, the Super Bowl LIX MVP who led the Eagles to a 40–22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs two years ago, will not play again this season due to blood clots. The person familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the health matter, told the AP that Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season.
Hurts was placed on injured reserve Saturday, two days after the Eagles disclosed a blood clot in his calf. He missed the first of at least four games in Philadelphia's 25–14 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The club and Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn, released a joint statement Monday. They said Hurts has deep vein thrombosis and a bilateral pulmonary emboli — a condition in which a blood clot has traveled from the legs to the lungs.
“He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations,” the statement said. Treatment involves blood thinners, and Hurts will not be allowed to participate in any football activities until he is off the medication.
The Eagles previously said the injury occurred when Hurts took a cleat to his calf area during a game against the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 4. He informed the medical staff of the injury after practice on Oct. 8. Hurts was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis.
Tanner McKee started in his absence Sunday, finishing 26 of 45 for 215 yards and a touchdown in the loss. The Eagles (2–4) have lost four consecutive games for the first time since 2020. Hurts has eight touchdown passes, three interceptions and 933 passing yards this season. He is in the middle of a five-year, $255 million contract extension with $179.3 million guaranteed.
