The move ends the Emmys’ seven-decade tradition of rotating among broadcasters ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, and gives the awards show its first dedicated platform. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The shift follows a trend of major Hollywood awards shows moving from broadcast television to streaming services. Last year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences struck a deal for YouTube to stream the Oscars starting in 2029, while Netflix has carried the Screen Actors Guild Awards since 2024.
Prime Video will carry the Emmys for free globally, a notable departure from the paywalled model of many streaming events. The deal arrives as the Emmy telecast faces viewership fluctuations. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on NBC drew 6.87 million viewers this year, down nearly 10% from the prior year, according to the Associated Press, though above the all-time low of 4.3 million reached in January 2024.
Amazon’s announcement positions Prime Video as a major player in live event streaming, alongside its existing sports rights and the upcoming Oscars deal on YouTube.
