The NYPD said in a brief statement on Thursday that federal agents shot an individual in New York City on 8 October. The person was conscious and taken to hospital. The shooting occurred around 4pm in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx. The NYPD said they were not on the scene at the time.
The NYPD has not specified which federal agency was involved. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not immediately respond to an inquiry from the Guardian.
Governor Kathy Hochul said in a short statement that she had been briefed on the incident. "We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident. New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why," she wrote.
Witness video, reported by the New York Times, appeared to show several agents in the middle of the street in the aftermath, one armed and another restraining a man on the ground. The City Reporter, a local news outlet, said video showed chaos after the shooting, with a crowd gathered and NYPD officers appearing to carry a man into the back of a vehicle.
