A fire swept through Kingston-upon-Thames' historic Market Place in the early hours of Tuesday, destroying a range of stalls and damaging the frontages of several properties. Eight people were evacuated from nearby buildings by police, and the London Fire Brigade brought the blaze under control by 6.08am. No injuries have been reported.

Fire crews were called to Kingston Market Place at around 4.30am on Tuesday, with four fire engines and about 25 firefighters attending. The blaze destroyed a number of market stalls and affected the frontage of several properties in the historic area, as well as a small part of a neighbouring property's roof.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "Control Officers took the first of six calls at 0433 and mobilised crews from Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was extinguished by 0608. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service."

Police evacuated eight people from the area. A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 04:49hrs on Tuesday, 6 October to reports of a fire in Market Place, Kingston. Officers attended alongside colleagues from the London Fire Brigade and LAS. No injuries have been reported."

A cordon remained in place on Tuesday morning as investigators worked to establish the cause of the fire.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • The fire damaged a historic market place that has been a trading site for around 800 years, raising concerns about heritage protection.
  • Eight residents were evacuated but safely returned; the incident highlights fire risks in older, mixed-use urban areas.
  • The cause investigation could lead to safety improvements for similar historic markets across London.

Background

Kingston Market Place is one of London's oldest market sites, located in the historic town centre of Kingston-upon-Thames. Its stalls sell a variety of goods and it is a well-known local landmark. The area comprises a mix of retail and residential properties, some with timber-framed frontages that can be vulnerable to fire.

Key Perspectives

Local traders and residents: They face uncertainty as stalls have been destroyed and some properties damaged. The cordon disrupts business and access until the investigation concludes. London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police: Their investigation will determine whether the fire was accidental or suspicious, and will inform any enforcement actions. Historic preservation groups: They may call for stricter fire safety measures in heritage areas to prevent similar incidents.

What to Watch

  • The outcome of the joint LFB and police investigation into the fire's cause.
  • The extent of structural damage to listed buildings and the timeline for repairs.
  • Whether any changes to fire safety regulations for historic market places follow.
