Germany's Sparkassen savings bank network has begun offering Bitcoin trading to its customers through its securities arm DekaBank. The service, called Krypto, powered by Deka, launched on October 19 and allows adult customers at participating banks to buy and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum and several other cryptocurrencies through the Sparkasse mobile app.

DekaBank, the securities provider for Germany's Sparkassen network, launched crypto trading on October 19. The service is available to adult customers who hold a current account at a participating Sparkasse and open a Deka crypto account through the app's investing section. In addition to Bitcoin, the offering covers Ethereum, Solana, XRP and Polygon's POL token.

The launch follows plans first reported in June 2025. Each Sparkasse decides independently whether to offer the service, and Deka says the rollout will proceed in stages over the coming months. Five banks are currently participating: Frankfurter Sparkasse, Sparkasse Rottal-Inn, Niederrheinische Sparkasse RheinLippe, Taunus Sparkasse and Sparkasse Karlsruhe.

Deka's pricing sheet sets a charge of €0.99 per purchase or sale, with no minimum order size and a maximum of €250,000 per transaction. The trading quote also includes a spread added to a market reference price, though the exact spread rate is not disclosed. The product page warns that technical faults or maintenance may prevent trading at certain times.

Deka holds customers' crypto centrally and keeps the private keys on their behalf in an omnibus wallet. Outbound transfers are permitted only to specified crypto-asset service providers; transfers to self-custody wallets are not supported. Custody and outbound delivery are listed as free.

The service warns that crypto holdings are subject to total loss and are not covered by statutory bank-deposit protection.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • The Sparkassen network is one of Germany's largest banking groups, serving millions of retail customers. Its entry into crypto trading signals growing acceptance of digital assets by traditional finance.
  • The launch offers a simple, low-fee way for ordinary savers to buy Bitcoin through their existing bank app, potentially accelerating mainstream adoption in Germany.
  • However, Deka's custodial model (bank holds the keys, no self-custody) and limited transfer options may disappoint crypto users who value personal control.

Background

The German savings bank network consists of hundreds of independent Sparkassen, each owned by local municipalities. DekaBank acts as the central securities and investment provider for the network. Plans for the crypto trading service were reported in June 2025, and the launch on October 19 represents the first live offering. The service is being rolled out gradually as individual Sparkassen opt in.

Key Perspectives

  • For individual savers: the service provides a familiar, regulated gateway to Bitcoin, with low trading fees and no minimum investment, but lacks the flexibility to withdraw coins to a private wallet.
  • For Deka and the Sparkassen: the offering allows them to meet growing customer interest in crypto while maintaining control through custodial holding and restricted outbound transfers.
  • For the crypto industry: a major traditional banking network offering crypto trading adds legitimacy, but the limitations may reinforce the tension between bank-managed and self-custodied assets.

What to Watch

  • The pace of rollout to additional Sparkassen banks, which will determine how quickly the service reaches a wider customer base.
  • Any later addition of self-custody transfer options, which could signal a shift toward more open crypto services.
  • Customer uptake numbers, once disclosed, will indicate the real demand among traditional banking customers.
