Ukrainian drone strikes damaged a bridge on a strategic road and energy facilities in Russia’s Rostov Oblast on Nov. 8, while Europe is set to join upcoming peace talks in Abu Dhabi, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said.
Drone debris reportedly damaged the bridge over the Mius River, on the R-280 highway linking Rostov Oblast with occupied Ukrainian territories including Crimea. Traffic on the road leading to the bridge was completely shut down due to drone damage, regional Governor Yuri Slyusar said. Slyusar later reported that a Ukrainian drone strike damaged a transformer at the Sulin power substation, cutting electricity in multiple villages. No casualties were reported. The Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova-Plus published footage purportedly depicting the attack, reporting that the target was struck by an FP-2 drone. The Kyiv Independent could not verify these claims.
Ukraine’s “middle strike” campaign, launched in spring 2026, has targeted Russian logistics along this road, part of the so-called “highway of death” used to carry military cargo to occupied Ukraine.
In a separate development, Barrot told RTL that Europe would be represented at the U.S.-mediated peace talks in Abu Dhabi. “The Europeans will be well represented, and France will be in Abu Dhabi to take part in these discussions,” he said, though he could not yet name France’s representative. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called for a dedicated EU envoy for the talks to prevent “condemning Europe to irrelevance,” a call supported by European Council President Antonio Costa. “The European Union’s participation must be organized in a manner that enables it to convey a clear and unified message, to defend its interests, and to support Ukraine,” Costa wrote on Nov. 6.
Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv overnight on Nov. 6-7, damaging residential buildings, a kindergarten and the Northern Bridge. At least six people were injured, according to authorities, including a 14-year-old girl, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Local resident Yuliia Ponomariova, 20, who used to attend the damaged kindergarten, told the Kyiv Independent: “Now I feel very empty. (This kindergarten) is very precious to me. I still can’t quite comprehend that an instant missile attack struck and destroyed an important place for me.”
Ukraine’s General Staff reported that its forces struck two Iskander missile launchers and a Pantsir-S1 air defense system in Russia’s Bryansk Oblast between Nov. 6 and 7, though the extent of damage was still being clarified. The military intelligence agency HUR identified seven Russian military personnel allegedly involved in the Nov. 2 airstrike on a school in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, where local authorities said at least 55 people were killed. One of the bombs used in the attack was a 3-ton FAB-3000. The identified personnel include the officer who planned the attack and six pilots, with the crew of a seventh aircraft still being identified.
Elsewhere, Ukraine struck the Proton electronic components factory in Oryol using a Neptune missile, the General Staff said, adding that a direct hit was confirmed and a fire broke out. The General Staff described the factory as a leading manufacturer of optoelectronic equipment and devices and said the strike complicates production of components for cruise and ballistic missiles. Exilenova-Plus reported that the Saratov Oil Refinery was set ablaze after being targeted.
Analysis
Why This Matters
- The bridge strike disrupts a key supply route for Russian forces in occupied Ukraine, potentially affecting the battlefield.
- Europe’s formal participation in peace talks could shift the diplomatic dynamic, giving Ukraine a stronger backer at the table.
- Continued strikes on Russian energy and industrial targets aim to degrade Moscow’s war production capacity.
Background
Ukraine launched its “middle strike” campaign in spring 2026 to target Russian logistics and infrastructure supporting the war. The R-280 highway, known as the “highway of death,” is a vital corridor for military cargo. The U.S.-mediated peace talks in Abu Dhabi are a new effort to end the war, with European countries seeking a greater role after being sidelined in previous negotiations.
