Paramount Skydance completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) today, closing a saga that began when Netflix announced its own plans to buy WBD last year. Netflix scrapped those plans in February, clearing the way for Paramount's acquisition.
In an announcement, Skydance said that all of its direct-to-consumer streaming services, including Discovery+ (launched by Discovery Inc. in 2021 before its merger with WarnerMedia in 2022), "will unify into a single service over time."
The merger creates a streaming behemoth combining content from HBO, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, CBS, Discovery Channel, and other properties. The move follows a trend of consolidation in the streaming industry as companies seek to compete with Netflix and other major players.
Details about the timeline, pricing, and branding of the unified service have not yet been announced. Paramount Skydance did not provide specifics on whether the individual services will remain available during the transition or how current subscribers will be affected.
