The ministry said the woman developed symptoms during quarantine and was linked to the first Kenyan case, a man who travelled from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and died at a Nairobi hospital on October 5. Seven Ebola cases are now receiving treatment at two isolation facilities, all within a single cluster. Nine cases have been confirmed from 135 contacts traced, including the two fatalities.
The wider outbreak, which began with the DRC's 17th Ebola epidemic in May, has now spread to four African countries, the widest geographic reach of any Ebola outbreak on the continent. The DRC has reported more than 9,000 cases and over 4,600 deaths. Nigeria confirmed its first case on Tuesday, and Nigerian Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate said on Friday that analysis showed the virus strain matched the one found in Kenya's index case. Uganda, which recorded 20 infections and two deaths before being declared Ebola-free in August, announced on Saturday that travellers with a history of travel to DRC would not be permitted to transit through the country.
