The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards were effectively "The Madonna Show", according to one review, with the veteran pop star winning seven awards from 13 nominations, the most of any artist this year. Her haul included artist of the year, a significant result given she has been on the scene since the 1980s and faced competition from powerhouses including Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter.
Swift still had a strong night, taking home the top gong, video of the year, for "Fate of Ophelia", as well as best direction for "Opalite" and the inaugural Artist Director Honours. The wins make her the most decorated artist in VMA history, surpassing her previous tied record with Beyonce.
It was a quiet night for Australian music, with the sole Australian nominee, Tame Impala, beaten by Olivia Rodrigo in the best alternative category. Elsewhere, 21-year-old Sienna Spiro claimed best new artist, and Lisa became the first K-pop solo artist to win best pop.
Madonna opened the ceremony live, with Snoop Dogg hosting the event. The night was marked by Madonna's "dad jokes" and Swift's cinematic, "Colleen Hoover-esque" music video, according to the review.
