The incident, which police described as "random" and "horrifying", occurred just before 1pm on Tuesday outside the Victoria Police headquarters on Spencer Street. Passers-by intervened to pull the man from the woman as the attack continued, police said.
The accused, a 27-year-old man, was arrested at the scene and has since been charged over the assault. He is scheduled to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. Police have not released his identity but confirmed the attack appears to have been unprovoked.
The woman, a mother who was with her child at the time, sustained multiple stab wounds and was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition. Her son was punched during the assault but suffered less severe injuries. Both victims are receiving treatment and support.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner described the attack as "deeply disturbing", particularly given its location directly outside the state’s central police headquarters. "This was a random, senseless act of violence against a mother and her child," he said. "Our thoughts are with the victims and their family."
Authorities have not disclosed the charges in detail but confirmed they are serious offences. The investigation is ongoing, and police have appealed for any witnesses who have not yet come forward to contact them.
The attack has reignited concerns about public safety in Melbourne’s CBD, which has seen a series of high-profile violent incidents over the past year. However, police have stressed that this appears to be an isolated event and there is no ongoing threat to the public. Additional patrols have been deployed in the area as a precaution.
