Mary Fowler has withdrawn from the Matildas squad for the upcoming friendlies against Germany and Haiti due to undisclosed personal circumstances.
Football Australia confirmed the decision in a brief statement on Tuesday, saying it was reached following discussions between Fowler, Manchester City and CommBank Matildas staff. No further information was provided about the 23-year-old's reasons for pulling out of international duty. Injury does not appear to be a factor.
The absence comes at a time when Fowler's partner, NRL star Nathan Cleary, is recovering from surgery to both of his legs after a career-threatening injury. Cleary suffered a compound fracture to his left leg during the Penrith Panthers' preliminary final defeat to the Newcastle Knights, three days after Fowler was named in the Matildas squad. It was later revealed he had also been carrying a stress fracture in his right foot.
Speaking after winning the Dally M medal last week, Cleary acknowledged the challenges of their long-distance relationship. 'It's tough doing the long distance, but she always makes me feel supported and loved, and that's all I've ever asked for, and she's just amazing,' he said.
Given her club commitments with Manchester City, the international window would have provided one of Fowler's few opportunities in the immediate future to return to Australia. However, there is no confirmation from any party that this is linked to her withdrawal.
