Large language models (LLMs) answer by attending, or looking back, over all earlier text. For very long inputs this means rereading a growing store of keys and values, making serving slow and expensive.
Chunk-indexed (CISA) changes a pretrained model without retraining. It groups past keys and values into fixed-size chunks, keeps short summaries, and lets each text position read only a few chosen chunks. Neighboring positions share one choice, cutting repeated indexing.
In one tested serving setup, long requests reached 2.29 times the throughput, or rate of completed work, of ordinary dense attention, with aggregate benchmark scores within 1.5 percentage points. Smaller chunk budgets are faster but less accurate.
