Milt Windler died on Thursday, surrounded by his family, according to a brief notice posted online. He was 94.
Windler was named a NASA flight director in 1968 after working on recovery operations during the Mercury and Gemini programs. He led a shift of flight controllers for Apollo 8, the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon, and Apollo 10, the lunar landing dress rehearsal. In 1970, he was one of four flight directors who directed the round-the-clock efforts to bring the Apollo 13 astronauts back to Earth safely after an oxygen tank explosion.
Windler also led shifts for the Apollo 12, Apollo 14, and Apollo 15 moon landings. He later served as a flight director for all three crewed missions to the Skylab space station.
