A major police operation is under way in Sydney's inner west after a man reportedly armed with a shotgun set a stolen van alight and fled on foot in Dulwich Hill, triggering a school lockdown, street closures and light rail cancellations.

Police were called to Williams Parade in Dulwich Hill about 10:20am on Thursday after reports of a stolen vehicle in a car park. Officers were told a man armed with a shotgun was seen inside the van before he set it alight and fled down Union Street towards Laxton Reserve.

Riot squad officers, police in bulletproof vests and the PolAir helicopter were deployed to the area. Forensic investigators were at the scene to "glean any information from that vehicle", Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald said.

Superintendent Fitzgerald said "no shots were fired" at the scene despite earlier reports, although members of the public were threatened. One school was placed into lockdown as part of the response.

A resident named Charlie told ABC News he was told by police he could not return home for a couple of hours after completing a night shift. He said his partner saw a burnt-out car and police told her to go back inside. "They've locked everyone down in the street," he said. He said neighbours witnessed a man steal a car before the owners followed him onto the street and he then "burnt out the car".

Police described the man as Caucasian, in his 20s, about 160 centimetres tall, of short build with shaggy hair, wearing a blue T-shirt and long black pants.

Light rail services have been cancelled between Dulwich Hill and Lilyfield, and a crime scene has been set up. NSW Police asked motorists to avoid the area and urged anyone who sights the man to call Triple Zero (000). Witnesses with mobile phone or dashcam footage were asked to share it with investigators.

The Sydney Morning Herald also reported a major police operation in the inner west.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • A heavily armed police response disrupted a residential Sydney suburb, with a school placed in lockdown and light rail services suspended.
  • The suspect remains at large, leaving an ongoing public safety situation in a densely populated part of the inner west.
  • The incident shows how a reported stolen vehicle can escalate into an armed threat and a large-scale policing operation.

Background

Dulwich Hill is a residential suburb in Sydney's inner west, served by the Inner West Light Rail line. Police operations on this scale are relatively uncommon in the area, and the response involving specialist officers and an air unit reflects the seriousness of the initial reports. Investigators are still working to establish the full sequence of events, including how the van came to be set alight.

Key Perspectives

NSW Police: Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald said no shots were fired but members of the public were threatened. Police are treating the man as a person of interest and are asking the public to report sightings and provide footage. Local residents: Residents such as Charlie described being locked down in their homes and streets, with his partner seeing the burnt-out car and being told to go back inside. Neighbours witnessed the car theft and the vehicle being set alight. Commuters and motorists: Light rail cancellations between Dulwich Hill and Lilyfield, along with road closures, are disrupting travel through the area while the operation continues.

What to Watch

  • Whether the suspect is located and taken into custody by police.
  • Updates from forensic investigators examining the burnt-out van at the scene.
  • When light rail services resume and lockdowns and road closures are lifted.
