The Electric Pantera Tattoo Parlour is buzzing. On Thursday afternoon, three men were sprawled across tattoo beds getting Newcastle Knights ink, one already wearing a Knights jersey. Mick Sharp, a chemical plant worker about to start a 12-hour night shift, finally got the Knights logo tattooed on his upper arm after years of wanting it. Sharp is such a passionate fan that he named his first son Joey after the legendary halfback Andrew 'Joey' Johns.
Sharp attended the Knights' preliminary final victory last Sunday and has tickets for this Sunday's grand final. 'I was at the game on Sunday and have tickets for this Sunday, so thought why not get amongst it,' he said. 'It was the best rugby league moment of my life. We talk about the Knights pretty much every time I get my tattoos. I can't believe the way the town lifts from it.'
A copy of the book 'Our Town, Our Team: The Story of the Newcastle Knights' sits on the parlour's reception desk. Fans are also taking selfies in front of a Knights mural at The Goodfriends Eatery at The Junction. The passion for the Knights, the article notes, is 'extra large'.
