Jeonbuk Bank has launched South Korea's first bitcoin-backed loan service from a conventional bank, according to a report from local media. The move aligns with a broader global trend of bitcoin-backed lending evolving into a more mainstream source of credit, where borrowers use the cryptocurrency as collateral for fiat loans.
The bank conducted its own stress tests to evaluate how bitcoin would perform during periods of high volatility, selecting it for its deep liquidity, which allows the collateral to be liquidated when necessary. While the report did not disclose specific loan rates, borrowing limits or collateral requirements, it noted that the bank reviewed loan-to-value ratios and margin-call thresholds for major tokens including bitcoin and ether while designing the product.
Jeonbuk Bank could expand the service based on market demand and changes to crypto regulations, the report said. The new offering follows the bank's CEO Park Chun-won's earlier announcement this year that the lender would roll out the country's first crypto-backed loan.
