Squarespace is laying off 19 percent of its employees, about 300 of its roughly 1,800 staff, as the website-building platform works to simplify its operations, company spokesperson Jeff Seedman said in a statement to The Verge.
Seedman said the changes are intended to simplify how the company operates, sharpen its priorities and let it move faster. He said Squarespace is grateful for the contributions of departing colleagues and is providing what he described as comprehensive support to help them through the transition.
Affected employees will receive 16 weeks of base pay and healthcare benefits into May 2027, according to Seedman.
The cuts come a little over two years after Squarespace's push into AI. In 2024 the company announced Blueprint AI, a tool that builds websites and generates website copy, blog posts and product descriptions. The private equity firm Permira also closed its acquisition of Squarespace around that time.
Analysis
Why This Matters
- Squarespace is a widely used platform for small businesses and independent creators, so staffing cuts at the company can affect how quickly its tools and support change for those customers.
- The reduction is large in proportional terms: one in five roles goes, at a company that has spent the past two years marketing AI website-building features.
- The severance terms extend healthcare cover into May 2027, a long runway relative to the 16 weeks of base pay.
Background
Squarespace sells website building, hosting and e-commerce tools, largely to small businesses and individual creators rather than large enterprises. In 2024 the company launched Blueprint AI, which generates site layouts and written content, positioning AI as central to its product direction. That same period brought a change of ownership, with the private equity firm Permira completing its acquisition of the company. Private equity ownership typically sharpens focus on operating costs and margins, which is the light in which the company frames these cuts: simplifying operations and moving faster.
What to Watch
- Whether Squarespace follows this round with further reductions, given the company describes the move as positioning itself for a next phase of growth rather than as a one-off correction.
- How the AI product line develops now that the company is smaller: whether Blueprint AI and similar tools take on more of the work the trimmed organisation was doing.
- Any public signals from Permira on the company's direction, including whether a sale or further restructuring is on the table.
- How customers experience the cuts, particularly around support and account services, where staffing reductions tend to show up first.
