The quarterly Reputation Risk Index, published by the Washington DC-based firm Global Situation Room, surveyed over 150 public affairs leaders from more than 20 countries. It found that AI misuse now stands as the top reputational risk, ahead of accusations of putting children in harm's way and infringing sensitive information.
"As AI is rapidly deployed for productivity gains, we have also seen diminishing public trust in the technology," said Isabel Casillas Guzman, chair of the council, in a statement. "AI use or overuse can quickly damage a company's standing with customers, investors, or other key stakeholders, making it essential for companies to deploy preventive tactics now."
The advisory urges companies to reduce or remove the use of AI content and rely on humans for customer service. While AI holds promise for organizational efficiency, respondents noted it also accelerates safety concerns, data breaches, fraud, and workforce disruption.
The top five ranking puts AI misuse ahead of actions or accusations of putting children at risk, infringements of sensitive information, unethical behavior for strategic advantage, and poor strategic decisions. Previous editions of the index had highlighted supply chain issues and divisive political stances.
