In a bid to modernize its community interactions, YouTube is rolling out several updates aimed at making comments more engaging and giving creators more ways to monetize their fan communities. The changes were unveiled at the company's Made On YouTube event on Wednesday.
Commenters will now be able to respond with GIFs, catching up to features already popular on other social networks. Users watching on television will also be able to leave comments using voice commands, avoiding the need to type out responses. The updates come as rivals like TikTok recently announced commenters can respond with voice, polls, photo carousels, and Live Photos, while Spotify has allowed video podcasters to use polls and Q&As.
Beyond comments, YouTube is introducing exclusive paid memberships, allowing creators to offer VIP-like areas for their most dedicated fans. Creators will also gain new tools to personalize moderation and provide fans with additional ways to help them generate revenue from their content.
