The first major survey of South Sudanese-Australian artist Atong Atem opens at the National Gallery of Victoria next week. Titled 'Passage: The Art of Atong Atem', it includes 65 of her photographs, several never seen in Australia, and explores themes of identity, displacement, and colonialism through a combination of portraiture, painting, and textiles.
