NATO is deploying additional military assets to the Black Sea in response to a sharp escalation in Russian attacks on merchant shipping, the alliance announced on Tuesday. The deployment, including maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems, drones and intelligence personnel, follows a wave of strikes on five cargo vessels and a rising death toll among civilian seafarers. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said the move was a defensive measure agreed by ambassadors in the North Atlantic Council.
