UK and EU complete food checks deal, implementation may be delayed until 2028
SPS agreement described as 'settled'; implementation may not come until 2028
The European Union and the United Kingdom have completed their deal to remove post-Brexit checks on imports and exports of food and animal products, with sources saying a 200-page text is 'settled' and there will be no further negotiation. Implementation is not expected until the first quarter of 2028, later than the previously expected May next year. The change in prime minister caused a six-month delay to the second UK-EU summit, now due on 20 November; the text will be presented to EU ambassadors at a Coreper meeting on Wednesday.
