Massive 2,600-year-old Egyptian structure found beneath Nile Delta using satellite radar
Clean sand foundation layer found beneath structure in waterlogged clay
Egyptian researchers have uncovered a sprawling 2,600-year-old structure the size of a football field beneath the Nile Delta's clay, after using satellite radar to look below the ground. The structure, at the ancient sacred city of Buto (modern Tell el-Fara'in), dates to the Saite period (688–525 BC); researchers say a clean sand layer beneath its mudbrick walls helps explain how it survived shifting soil.
