Former independent MP Cathy McGowan has warned that the attack on Helen Haines has struck at the heart of Australian democracy, telling a community vigil in Wodonga that violence must not win. Haines, 65, remains in a critical condition in hospital after having both legs amputated, while the accused, Brendan Nugent, 43, made no application for bail when he fronted Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.
