Hungary to unmask communist-era informants as agent files go public
Searchable online database of tens of thousands of names, an election promise by Péter Magyar, opens on Wednesday
Hungary will on Wednesday reveal the names of tens of thousands of informants who reported to the communist state-security services, as Péter Magyar appears intent on fulfilling the promise he made during the campaign for April’s parliamentary elections. The names go online in a new searchable database built from files held for decades in the basement of the Historical Archives of the State Security services; researchers say it will make Hungary’s former state service the most transparent in the former eastern bloc.
