Egyptian court fines editor Lina Attalah and orders closure of news site Mada Masr
Ruling branded a 'crushing blow to press freedom' by Amnesty International as journalist is taken into custody
The editor-in-chief of the independent Egyptian news outlet Mada Masr, Lina Attalah, has been taken into custody after a court convicted her of managing an unlicensed website and ordered the site's closure, her lawyers said. The New Cairo Misdemeanours Court imposed the maximum fine of 3m Egyptian pounds ($53,500; £40,100) on Attalah, who rejected the charge. She will be held until the fine is paid.
